Spurs produce late fightback to stun Brighton

At a glance

ByAlex HoadBBC Sport Journalist

Tottenham came from behind to beat Brighton and cap their best WSL season in an absorbing match at Amex Stadium on the final day.

FA Cup finalists Brighton looked to be heading to Wembley off the back of a win, after Madison Haley poked home a second-half opener after a fumble from Spurs keeper Lize Kop.

However Olivia Holdt lashed home the leveller nine minutes from time and Toko Koga lobbed a spectacular stoppage-time winner after Seagulls keeper Sophie Baggaley was caught out of position.

Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the final day of a WSL campaign to six games, and ended Brighton's club-record five-match unbeaten run in the top flight.

Brighton began on the front foot and Kop had to race out of her area to tackle Fran Kirby for a loose ball, and also pushed away an angled drive from Kiko Seike.

At the other end Holdt lobbed Baggaley - handed a start in place of number one Chiamaka Nnadozie - after a poor clearance but her 35-yard effort drifted over the bar, while Cathinka Tandberg prodded wide of the post as Spurs grew in stature, with Signe Gaupset pulling the strings.

Baggaley made a brilliant save to deny Matilda Vinberg when clean through before the interval, but the Seagulls flew out of the blocks after the turnaround and Haley broke the deadlock after 49 minutes, sliding to turn in the loose ball after Kop spilled Seike's low strike from the right.

Skipper Maisie Symonds fired wide from distance on her 100th Brighton appearance while Tandberg dragged a shot across goal and looped a close-range header off-target at the other end - following a cross from sub Lenna Gunning-Williams.

Albion full-back Charlie Rule limped off just after the hour in a potential blow before Wembley, while Beth England came on with 12 minutes remaining - seeking to add to her club record 38 goals in her final Spurs appearance.

However it was Holdt who lashed home the leveller with her club-leading eighth goal of the WSL season less than three minutes later, after Albion failed to clear Gunning-Williams' low cross.

There was still time for a winner as Baggaley raced out of her area in stoppage time to clear a ball over the top, only for it to drop to Koga near the centre circle to curl home a wonderful finish.

Analysis - Tottenham confirm themselves as 'best of the rest'

After their ninth one-goal win of the campaign Tottenham finished with a club-record 36 points, just four behind Manchester United - with hopes of further closing the gap with some ambitious signings this summer.

Under incoming boss Martin Ho Tottenham have matched their best WSL finish of fifth from 2022 and earned a record points haul, just a year after finishing second bottom, improving by 16 points this season.

Brighton fell below London City Lionesses into seventh and were two short of their previous best record of 28 points, set last season, but still have the FA Cup final against Manchester City on 31 May to look forward to.
